Mission

The Individual Studies, A.S. program offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary degree to students aspiring to baccalaureate-level study. Students in this program will develop an academic plan, which meets their academic and career goals and provides a path to transfer to a four-year institution. Graduates will complete the SUNY General Education requirements.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students in Individual Studies, A.S. will:

  1. Demonstrate effective communication skills.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of societal, cultural and global awareness through exploration of language, art, or historical context.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of major concepts, models, and issues of at least one discipline in the social sciences and/or identify the major theories used by political and social scientists to study practices of democracy.
  4. Understand and use mathematical skills and employ quantitative methods to solve problems.
  5. Demonstrate application of scientific reasoning, concepts and models in one of the natural or physical sciences.
  6. Identify, analyze, and evaluate ideas and arguments in individual and others’ work.
  7. Show competency to use and evaluate with modern information technology tools to conduct research.

 


Students whose transfer goals for baccalaureate study cannot be attained through existing programs may be allowed to structure individualized degree programs. Qualified students, with their advisor, develop an academic plan for degree completion that will allow selection of the combination General Education and concentration area coursework that will meet the transfer program requirements.

This is not a program for students unsure of their goals or simply exploring several areas of study.

Notes

  • For this program, students will meet the minimum content requirements for an Associate in Science degree, which include completing courses in at least 7 of 10 General Education categories and completing at least 30 credits in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Students will submit a plan of study, which will include all past educational credits, which the student wishes to have accepted toward completion of the curriculum. This plan will be reviewed by the appropriate Department, depending on the student’s area of concentration. Changes may be made by the student, with the approval of the appropriate Academic Division Dean.
