Mission

The A.S. Degree in Sport Studies prepares students for transfer to senior institutions in order to complete a baccalaureate in the following areas:  Teacher certification, Sport Studies, Coaching, Fitness, Athletic Training, and Exercise Science. Graduates holding the A.S. degree also are prepared for immediate employment in:  fitness facilities/recreation centers in public organizations and community settings.  The program combines general education and physical education, preparing students for transfer to four-year schools or to start a career.  Sport Studies also includes an internship in the campus fitness center and community fitness centers, giving students valuable hands-on experience in the field as well as the opportunity for service learning.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the components of wellness, including:  physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, and occupational, which impact health and wellness.
  2. Explain the importance of the five health related components of physical fitness, including:  cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition, and how they contribute to one’s overall health.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the many areas of Sports Studies focusing on Physical Education and sport skills or Sport and Exercise Science.
  4. Identify major historical events, philosophies, theories, sociological and cultural perspectives, and current issues related to physical education, health, and sport.
  5. Exhibit appropriate individual and social behavior, team dynamics, and motivation to effectively work with others in a professional setting related to sports, wellness, physical fitness, and lifetime sports.

The Sport Studies, AS program offers two pathways. Students will choose Path I or Path II. Elective options will be based on transfer institutions. Please check with your transfer institution for its requirements.

First Year


Spring Semester (16 Credits)


  • Gen Ed US History & Civic Engagement (3 Credits)
    (HIS 130 or HIS 131 or HIS 187 or HIS 194)
  • Gen Ed Mathematics (3 Credits)
    (MAT 115 or MAT 124)

Second Year


Fall Semester (14-16 Credits)


  • Gen Ed The Arts: ART, MUS, THR (3 Credits)
  • Gen Ed World History & Global Awareness (3 Credits)
    (HIS 116 or HIS 117 or HIS 103 or HIS 104)
  • Gen Ed World Languages (3-4 Credits)

The Sport Studies AS program offers different pathways for the Second Year, Fall  Semester. Students will choose Path I or Path II in addition to taking the courses listed above.

Spring Semester (15.5-16.5 Credits)


Total Credits: 60-63
