HIT 236 - Quality Improvement & Risk Management


This course covers the principles of quality assessment, clinical documentation improvement, utilization management, regulatory influences, data collection, risk monitoring, and performance improvement methodologies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the development and regulatory influences on healthcare quality, utilization management, and risk management.
  2. Explain and apply Quality Improvement (QI) principles including workflow analysis and change management.
  3. Perform audits, collect performance data, analyze trends, and present findings visually.
  4. Monitor data to detect risks, adverse events, and clinical documentation (CDI) -related issues.
  5. Recognize the health information management role in performance indicator reporting and quality initiatives.
  6. Support patient navigation by understanding utilization review/management and reimbursement influences on access.
  7. Educate and mentor others regarding health information management and quality improvement principles.
  8. Apply conflict resolution skills in quality improvement and clinical documentation improvement scenarios.
  9. Develop implementable quality improvement tools and recommendations.
