HIT 101 - Introduction to Health Information Systems


Introduction to the organization of healthcare delivery and the health information profession. Includes electronic and paper record structure, documentation standards, numbering and filing systems, registries and indexes, data sets, statistics, and foundational privacy, security, and HIPAA concepts. In addition to beginning their career exploration, students will examine strategies for academic and personal wellness and success.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the history and basic responsibilities of the health information profession. 
  2. Recognize and describe the uses, users, and functions of the health record.
  3. Identify professionals with legal authority to access electronic health records and their professional obligations to document patient care services.
  4. Explain the health record life cycle and apply relevant procedures.
  5. Recognize the impact of licensure and accreditation standards on health information management policy and procedures.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of statistical terminology by calculating descriptive statistics and solving fundamental statistical problems.
  7. Calculate descriptive statistics and solve fundamental statistical problems.
  8. Follow legal requirements when releasing personal health information to patients and authorized individuals and organizations.
  9. Develop strategies for academic success, personal wellness and success, and identify educational and career goals.
