HIT 244 - Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity


This course introduces Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and their impact on health equity, access, and outcomes. Students analyze how social and structural systems influence disparities while developing foundational health data skills, including documentation review, data management, spreadsheet analysis, and visualization. Emphasis is placed on equity, rights, and social justice in healthcare consistent with practice in Health Information Technology.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the historical and contemporary societal factors that shape the development of individual and group identity involving race, class, and gender.
  2. Analyze the role that complex networks of social structures and systems play in the creation and perpetuation of the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity.
  3. Apply the principles of rights, access, equity, and autonomous participation to past, current, or future social justice action.
  4. Students will identify the consequences of inequities (including race, class, and gender) in the United States at the individual, group, and systemic levels in order to describe and analyze health disparities.
  5. Identify SDOH in clinical documentation and population data.
  6. Enter, export, and manage SDOH data using templates and interoperability concepts.
  7. Utilize business intelligence software for data analysis and visual representation.
  8. Create visualization and interpret SDOH data tailored to the intended audience.
