HST 106 - Public Health & Policy


This introductory course explores the historical development and current challenges of public health systems and policies, with an emphasis on social justice, economic, and environmental determinants of health. Students will examine how public health policies shape health outcomes, especially among underserved populations, and the role of civic engagement in promoting health equity. Students will gain a foundational understanding of how public health intersects with social justice.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe how social, economic, and environmental factors have historically contributed to health disparities, and explain the civic role individuals and communities can play in addressing them.
  2. Identify barriers to healthcare access in underserved communities and explore how public engagement and advocacy can help reduce these obstacles.
  3. Explain the role of public health systems and policies in advancing or hindering health equity, and assessing their impact on diverse communities.
  4. Evaluate strategies such as public health campaigns, community organizing, or policy reform used to promote health equity and empower underserved populations.
