HST 103 - Epidemiology: Basic Principles


This introductory course provides students with a foundational understanding of epidemiology as the core science of public health. Students will learn basic concepts and methods used to study the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations. Students will explore how epidemiological principles are used to track disease patterns, identify risk factors, and inform evidence-based interventions and health policies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Define key epidemiological terms and concepts, including incidence, prevalence, risk and rates.
  2. Describe the major types of epidemiologic study designs and their applications.
  3. Apply basic epidemiologic methods to interpret data and assess patterns of disease in populations.
  4. Explain the role of epidemiology in public health surveillance, outbreak investigation, and health policy development.
