PTA 111 - Fundamental PTA Skills & Modalities I


In this course students will be introduced to the basic physical therapy skills and interventions necessary for providing patient care across the continuum of physical therapy settings.  Students will develop competency in infection control techniques, proper body mechanics, safety and emergency procedures, basic data collection, bed mobility, transfers, gait training with assistive devices, wheelchair management, thermal agent application, and basic therapeutic exercise.  Students will develop professional communication skills and clinical problem-solving skills through weekly case study application.

Corequisites - PTA 100 Intro to Physical Therapy Assistant, BIO 131 Anatomy & Physiology I

Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Communicate verbally and non-verbally in a professional and therapeutic manner, as demonstrated with a surrogate patient.
  2. Demonstrate competent and safe implementation of interventions and data collection elements.
  3. Demonstrate safe patient management techniques when performing therapeutic interventions and mobility activities with a surrogate patient, including body mechanics.
  4. Identify appropriate measures to take for proper infection control and for safety and emergency procedures.
  5. Identify stages of healing and general rehabilitation guidelines for each stage.
  6. Demonstrate accurate, clear, and concise documentation skills.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to implement adjustments to therapeutic interventions to maximize patient safety, comfort, and effectiveness of intervention within the plan of care of the physical therapist and scope of practice of the PTA.
