STM 298 - Senior Seminar


This course is a capstone course for students in the LAAS program who plan to go on to major in the natural sciences.  Students will learn how to search for, read, listen to and interpret scientific papers, and present scientific information to others in a formal setting.  This will prepare students for their science program at their transfer institution by helping them to become better consumers and producers of scientific information.

Prerequisite- Corequisite
Prerequisites:  BIO 117 Principles of Biology I and BIO 118 Principles of Biology II, or CHM 145 General Chemistry I and CHM 146 General Chemistry II, or PHY 161 General Physics I and PHY 162 General Physics II, or PHY 181 Physics for Engineers & Scientists I and PHY 182 Physics for Engineers & Scientists II

Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to search a scientific journal database for information specific to their interest.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to convey complicated topics in an understandable way to their peers.
  3. Conduct a formal presentation on a current topic in the natural sciences.
  4. Clearly articulate an issue or problem.
  5. Identify, analyze, and evaluate ideas, data, and arguments as they occur in their own or others’ work.
  6. Acknowledge limitations such as perspective and bias.
  7. Develop well-reasoned (logical) arguments to form judgments and/or draw conclusions.
