HOS 242 - Hospitality Human Resources


This course provides an overview of human resource management in the hospitality industry, focusing on how organizations effectively manage their workforce. Students will examine hiring practices, including recruiting, selecting, and retaining employees, and how these decisions impact operations. The course also explores workplace relationships, policies, and legal and ethical considerations, encouraging students to think critically, gather information, and view issues from multiple perspectives. In addition, students will build leadership and communication skills by engaging in respectful discussions, considering different viewpoints, and learning how to navigate workplace challenges and conflict.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe and explain key human resource functions in hospitality
  2. Analyze recruitment, selection, and retention practices
  3. Evaluate employee relations, workplace policies, and legal and ethical issues in hospitality by engaging in the deliberation of ideas through reasoned inquiry, seeking new information, and considering multiple viewpoints.
  4. Apply leadership and communication strategies to hospitality HR situations by practicing respectful dialogue, sharing diverse viewpoints, and resolving conflicts constructively.
