ENV 260 - Soil Science


This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to Soil Science from the environmental and management perspective in both natural settings and controlled environments. The course will cover the characterization, morphology and genesis of soils, issues of soil management and soil ecology, human pressures on soil resources and the resulting increasing significance and role of substrates in controlled environments.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the distribution and variability of soils and their properties across a landscape using observation and data analysis.
  2. Observe and articulate the various soil properties, how they are created, and how they affect landscape processes on a local and regional scale.
  3. Analyze data and apply concepts as related to soil characteristics in outdoor environments and substrates in controlled environments.
