Mission

The mission of the Mathematics A.S. is to prepare students for transfer into a 4-year Mathematics program by providing a substantial foundation in the concepts and techniques of mathematics, including single- and multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and statistics or higher mathematics as the student chooses. With courses offered by expert faculty, and supported by a Math Lab for tutoring assistance, options to choose electives of interest and the ability to complete SUNY General Education requirements, students will be well-prepared to successfully transfer into a baccalaureate program. 

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Associate of Science Degree in Mathematics, the student will:

  1. Understand and use mathematical notation fluently.
  2. Use advanced mathematical techniques to solve problems.
  3. Read, understand, and construct mathematical proofs. 
  4. Use technology appropriately to support investigation of mathematical ideas and solutions of problems.
  5. Be able to apply mathematical techniques to other fields.

Students with the appropriate background in mathematics can expect to complete the degree within two years, sooner if they take courses during the summer.  Future students will have the flexibility of beginning the program in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.

  • MAT 250 Discrete Mathematics (4 credits)
  • MAT 260 Applied Probability and Statistics (4 credits)
  • MAT 282 Differential Equations with Linear Algebra (4 credits)
  • MAT 266 Introduction to Real Analysis (3 credits)
  • PHI 202 Logic (3 credits)

Students interested in a more statistical focus may choose from the following electives after taking MAT 260:

  • MAT 224 Statistics II (3 credits)
  • MAT 245 Design of Experiments (3 credits)

** General Education Courses (21-23 credits total)

The balance of the 64 credits for the Mathematics A.S. is filled out by taking courses in the following General Education Categories:

  • American History
  • Arts
  • Foreign Language
  • Other World Civilizations
  • Social Science
  • Western Civilization

Note: 7 of the 10 General Education categories must be met for graduation. Core and other required courses satisfy Mathematics, Natural Science, Basic Communication, and Humanities. Students planning to transfer are recommended to complete all ten areas.”
