LIT 274 - Introduction to African American Literature
This survey course will introduce students to African American literature from Colonial America to the present. Various genres, representative works, and major writers will be examined in terms of development, theme, structure, and context. This will be a study of African American literature as both artistic and cultural expression.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the conventions and methods of literature and literary analysis.
- Recognize and analyze nuance and complexity of meaning through critical reflections on texts.
- Describe the historical and contemporary societal factors that shape the development of individual and group identity involving race, class, and gender.
- Analyze the role that complex networks of social structures and systems play in the creation and perpetuation of the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity.
- Apply the principles of rights, access, equity, and autonomous participation to past, current, or future social justice action.
