Mission

The Homeland Security A.S. program prepares students for positions in fields such as homeland security, emergency management, and criminal justice, in both government and private organizations. Courses are taught by faculty with real-world experience. The program features a blend of SUNY General Education and Liberal Arts requirements, along with coursework specific to homeland security, emergency management, criminal justice, and fire science. This program promotes critical thinking, professionalism, and ethical responsibility. The Homeland Security A.S. program prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security, Emergency Management, or related programs. 

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will describe the structure of the various aspects of the homeland security system within the United States.
  2. Students will describe the duties, roles, and procedures within the field of homeland security.
  3. Students will examine appropriate responses to emergencies.            
  4. Students will explain the motivation and methods behind acts of terrorism.  
  5. Students will demonstrate effective written communication skills.

  • General Education Math (3-4 Credits)
  • General Education Natural Laboratory Science (4 Credits)
  • HLS Program Elective (any CRJ, EMT, FRS, HLS not already required, or BIT 207) (3 Credits)

Second Year


Spring Semester (15-16 Credits)


  • HLS Program Elective (any CRJ, EMT, FRS, HLS not already required, or BIT 207) (3 Credits)  
  • General Education Foreign Language  (3-4 Credits)
  • US History Elective (any Gen Ed US History) (3 Credits)

Graduation Requirement: 60-62.50 Credits
