HST 215 - Laboratory Techniques
This course introduces students to essential skills used in the clinical laboratory. Instruction focuses on laboratory safety guidelines and practices, the accurate use of medical terminology, and the rigorous standards for specimen identification, labeling, and processing. Learners are introduced to simple CLIA-waived and point-of-care testing procedures and the operation of common laboratory equipment. Additionally, learners will gain an understanding of laboratory informatics, including electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS), as well as quality assurance principles and inventory management processes. Throughout the term, emphasis is placed on developing the communication and critical thinking skills necessary for a collaborative healthcare environment.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use medical terminology, prefixes, and suffixes accurately when describing body systems, specimen types, and common laboratory procedures.
- Describe safety standards, PPE protocols, and proper specimen handling techniques to maintain specimen integrity and meet laboratory quality and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Summarize and document basic CLIA-waived and point-of-care testing: including urinalysis and common rapid tests, using appropriate quality control measures.
- Describe the appropriate use and purpose of electronic health records and laboratory information systems in patient registration, test ordering, specimen tracking, and results reporting, with attention to HIPAA compliance.
