HST 214 - Phlebotomy Techniques and Skills
This course provides an in-depth study of phlebotomy practices, specimen collection techniques, and clinical safety standards used in modern healthcare environments. Emphasis is placed on CDC and OSHA regulatory compliance, infection control, ethical decision-making, and effective communication with diverse patient populations. Students study laboratory testing practices such as patient identification, infection control, venipuncture and capillary blood collection, specimen handling, quality assurance, and professional communication; along with crisis-intervention strategies to maintain professionalism in challenging clinical situations. The course integrates skill development with career readiness competencies to prepare students for entry level clinical phlebotomy employment in hospitals, clinics, and laboratory settings.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe CDC and OSHA safety standards, including proper PPE use and infection control, during all specimen collection procedures.
- Explain how to perform a venipuncture, capillary, and specialty blood collection technique accurately and safely.
- Identify effective communication skills and explain how to respectfully interact with diverse patient populations, including different ages and special needs groups.
- Describe appropriate strategies to manage patient anxiety, challenging interactions, and crisis situations in a professional manner.
