Mission

Paramedic A.A.S. program prepares students to enter the field as a New York State (NYS) certified paramedic by meeting the objectives of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and New York State Department of Health (DOH). It also prepares students to take the NYS DOH Paramedic exam. The program features a blend of SUNY General Education and Liberal Arts requirements, along with coursework specific to paramedic. This program promotes critical thinking, professionalism, and ethical responsibility by providing a diverse and rich classroom and clinical experience.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will develop contextual, integrative, and adaptive competence of a professional entry-level paramedic.        
  2. Students will apply the fundamental knowledge of the Emergency Medical System (EMS).
  3. Students will demonstrate conceptual, technical, and interpersonal competence by meeting all knowledge (cognitive), skill (psychomotor), and behavioral (affective) objectives of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and New York State Department of Health.   
  4. Students will demonstrate effective written and verbal communication and critical thinking.

The Lourdes Hospital Paramedic Program is delivered at SUNY Broome Community College.  Lourdes Hospital Paramedic Program’s mission is to provide the community with outstanding paramedics in a timely and affordable manner.  Offered are an associate degree (AAS) and the opportunity to sit for the NYS examination for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P). 

The paramedic A.A.S. course sequence includes classroom, hands-on skill development, hospital clinical experience, and field internships.  The program includes courses required for admission to the New York State Department of Health Paramedic certification exam.

The curriculum is segmented into small courses.  Courses meet three times a week.  The program can be completed over 2 years, with one summer semester. Qualified students, with the approval of the Program Director may design a customized full-time or part-time program.  Students may be able to sit for the NYS Paramedic exam in 12 months.

The Lourdes Hospital Paramedic Program delivered at SUNY Broome is also known as the Southern Tier Paramedic Program (S.T.P.P.) and is a collaborative effort between SUNY Broome Community College and Lourdes Hospital.  Lourdes Hospital is the NYS Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Services Training Sponsor.

Prerequisites

Prior to admission a student must:

  1. Have a high school diploma or an equivalent;
  2. Submit a completed paramedic program application;
  3. Be admitted to SUNY Broome Community College.

Prior to starting the Paramedic Course sequence a student must:

  1. Meet with the EMT Paramedic Program Director/advisor for specific information;
  2. Hold a valid New York State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, and have held such certification for a minimum of 3 months (NYS EMT certification can be completed through SUNY Broome via EMT 110 which is offered fall, spring and summer semesters);
  3. Maintain a valid NYS EMT certification while enrolled in any PMD designated course;
  4. Have a minimum of 1 year of EMT crew-chief experience and successful completion of 70 hours of BLS ambulance clinical time (preferred). If not, students must submit 2 letters of recommendation.

Admission to the College and finishing General Education requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the Lourdes Hospital Paramedic Program delivered at SUNY Broome Community College.

Program follows the national standard curriculum determined by the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration.  Program requires a minimum of 600 classroom hours, 560 hospital clinical hours and 440 hours of ambulance ride time.

Students are eligible to take the New York State Paramedic practical and written exams upon successful completion of all PMD courses (9) and Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology or Anatomy & Physiology I or II.

Successful completion of core paramedic curriculum is required to be eligible to take the New York State written and practical examinations.
