Mission

The mission of Medical Transcription Certificate is to prepare students for productive careers in the dynamic and challenging medical transcription profession at an entry level. Students will develop skills necessary for the performance of accurate, confidential, and quality patient documentation.  It instills students with a sense of commitment, integrity, and professional ethics.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Ability to accurately communicate with members of the healthcare team using effective verbal and written communication while maintaining patient confidentiality and with regard to policies and procedures regulating documentation and reporting of medical information.
  2. Application of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology concepts into the skills of an entry level medical transcriptionist.
  3. Produce an error free transcribed letter, consultation, chart note, history and physical report, and discharge summary dictated by a variety of members of the healthcare team.
  4. Edit the transcript to correct obvious grammatical and punctuation errors, while identifying medical transcription inconsistencies.
  5. Develop keyboarding skills and an increased knowledge of medical terminology, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to utilize references and resources efficiently.

Medical Transcriptionists understand and use medical terms, appropriate reference materials, word processing equipment and software to transcribe medical reports dictated by physicians and other health care professionals.

Medical transcriptionists work in a variety of settings, including Health Information Departments and ancillary professional departments of hospitals (e.g. radiology, pathology, etc.), clinics, doctors’ offices, private transcription businesses and other health care facilities.
