Mission

The S.T.E.M. – Environmental Science Associate in Science major is intended to appeal to a broad audience of students who are  interested in four-year degrees in the Environmental Sciences. This program meets the college’s mission by providing a University parallel degree for students aspiring to baccalaureate degrees and professions. The program also meets the college’s mission by fulfilling a broad range of General Education Requirements (GERs) intended to “broaden and deepen students’ intellectual, moral, civic, and social competence for effective participation in the world community.” Lastly, the program provides career advising, skills, and knowledge assessment related to jobs and programs that fall under the umbrella of environmental sciences.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain environmental issues related to New York State, the United States and the world. 
  2. Understand the scientific concepts that intimately affect environmental problems and solutions. 
  3. Define the policies and solutions used by governmental agencies and individuals to respond to environmental issues. 
  4. Understand the interrelationship of social capital, economic capital and natural capital and how they relate to the concepts of sustainability and environmental health.
  5. Understand how small changes in the lifestyle of an individual can contribute to worldwide environmental sustainability.
  6. Be informed of the various careers and transfer opportunities in the Environmental Sciences.

The Environmental Science program is an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for transfer into four-year Environmental Science and Studies programs.  The program is modeled after the first two-years of Environmental Science and Studies programs at schools such as Binghamton University and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Students will learn basic scientific concepts and understand the interrelationship of these concepts with the environment.  A strong emphasis on sustainability, ecological impact and the politics of the environment will be addressed in the program.

Sequence of Courses

The following model meets all program requirements for students who are pursuing full-time study and wish to complete the course work in four semesters.  Those who desire a slower pace or need preparatory courses will require more than four semesters.

First Year


Fall Semester (15 Credits)


  •  Environmental Science Elective (4 Credits)
  • US History Elective (3 Credits)

Spring Semester (16 Credits)


  • Environmental Science elective (4 Credits)
  • Social Science elective (3 Credits)
  • Physical Education (1 Credit)

Second Year


Graduation Requirement: 64 Credits
