Associate in Applied Science

CIP CODE: 43.0107

This program is designed for full-time students desiring employment after two years of study. Careful planning and selection of courses is necessary to complete the program in two years. Many students take advantage of summer terms to fill general education requirements. Consult a Criminal Justice & Emergency Services advisor or Department Chair for specific details on selection of proper electives.

The program also is designed to meet the needs of students wishing to transfer to a four-year degree program upon graduation from SUNY Broome Community College.

Students entering Criminal Justice must understand that most law enforcement agencies have physical, psychological, and medical fitness standards, and require a background free of felony and serious misdemeanor convictions. In some cases, juvenile delinquency adjudications may exclude a person from employment in any level of law enforcement.

This course of study is not intended for prospective law school students.

SEQUENCE OF COURSES: This model is a two-year course schedule for students meeting all program requirements and deciding to pursue full-time study. Schedules will be redesigned for those requiring preparatory courses or those deciding to pursue part-time study. Students placed into ENG 110S are required to take CRJ 111 before taking any other Criminal Justice course.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will understand the main components of the criminal justice system.
  2. Students will understand the purpose of the criminal justice system as it relates specifically to law enforcement.
  3. Students will understand due process and the various categories of criminal law.
  4. Students will understand the sociological philosophy that encompasses criminology and victimology.
