Associate in Science

CIP CODE: 50.0901

Students majoring in music may pursue four areas of study that will prepare them for transfer to senior institutions. These areas are: Music Education and Performance, Music Industry, Sound Engineering, and Music Therapy.

Students in this degree program are prepared to take transfer placement exams at senior institutions in the areas of written, and aural, theory and music performance, and generally achieve junior standing at baccalaureate degree granting institutions.

Students selecting music as a major are expected to be committed to a career in music and intrinsically motivated to meet high standards in: performance, aural skills, theory, and history.

Program Goals:

  1. Students will be able to understand and articulate the historical development of music within the contexts of history, theory, performance and musical masterworks.
  2. Students will be sufficiently prepared to transfer successfully into baccalaureate programs in music education, music performance, music industry, music therapy and sound engineering.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Within a historical context, students will be able to describe and aurally discern major vocal and instrumental compositions and forms such as the: symphony, concerto, sonata, opera, oratorio, cantata, motet and madrigal.
  2. Students will be able to perform outstanding vocal and instrumental music from the standard classical and modern musical literature through the taking of private lessons and enrollment in one or more of SUNY Broome’s ensembles such as: Choir, Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble or College Band.
  3. Students will be able to articulate the intrinsic constructs of music as they relate to music theory, music history and musical styles and practices of major composers from the Renaissance through the post modern era.
