In alignment with the National, Regional and Local initiatives regarding STEM, the Mathematics Department at SUNY Broome Community College is offering an Associate’s Degree (A.S.) in Mathematics. The intent of the program is to grant existing and future potential students a viable option for a substantial preparation in the foundations of mathematics. A further intent of the program is for graduates to successfully and smoothly transfer to any SUNY college or university for continuance towards a Baccalaureate Degree in Mathematics or some related field. Additionally, the students may have the option and preparation to start their professional career.
The core content of the program consists of single- and multi-variable calculus, differential equations, and logic. Electives in the program include linear algebra, introduction to analysis, statistics, and other courses. The balance of courses in the program fulfills SUNY General Education requirements.
Students with the appropriate background in mathematics can expect to complete the degree within two years, sooner if they take courses during the summer. Future students will have the flexibility of beginning the program in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.
Program Learning Outcomes:
- Understand and use mathematical notation fluently.
- Use advanced mathematical techniques to solve problems.
- Read, understand, and construct mathematical proofs.
- Use technology appropriately to support investigation of mathematical ideas and solutions of problems.
