Fire Protection Technology: A.A.S.

Mission

The Fire Protection Technology A.A.S. program prepares students for positions in the field of fire prevention and protection. Courses are taught by faculty with real-world experience. The program features a blend of SUNY General Education and Liberal Arts requirements along with coursework specific to fire prevention and protection. This program promotes critical thinking, professionalism, and ethical responsibility. With specific advisement, the program may also prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related programs.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will understand the basic principles of firefighting.
  2. Students will understand fire behavior and the chemistry of fire.        
  3. Students will understand the history and structure of laws in the United States.          
  4. Students will understand the functions of line and staff personnel within the fire service organization.

FRS Suggested Electives


Choose any FRS, HLS, EMT course.  All Fire Electives should be selected in consultation through advisement to ensure they meet program requirements.

Notes


Valid New York State Firefighter I and II, and EMT certification will be reviewed for credit toward FRS elective credit on an individual basis.

Two writing emphasis courses (W) are required after completing ENG 110. HLS 150W and FRS 200W are recommended courses to meet this requirement.

Fire Protection Technology (FRS) elective courses are offered on a rotating basis and should be taken when offered.
