Individual Studies: A.S.

Associate in Science

CIP CODE: 24.0102

Mission

The Individual Studies Associate in Science major offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary degree to students aspiring to baccalaureate-level study. This university-parallel program offers students an opportunity to design their degree completion at SUNY Broome with customized course selection, allowing them to create a seamless transfer to their four-year institution. Graduates complete a minimum of seven of the ten SUNY General Education requirements.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Liberal Arts Individual Studies (ISAS) students will demonstrate basic proficiency in written and oral English.
  2. Liberal Arts Individual Studies (ISAS) students will demonstrate familiarity with social science concepts and methods.
  3. Liberal Arts Individual Studies (ISAS) students will demonstrate basic proficiency in math and science.
  4. Liberal Arts Individual Studies (ISAS) students will demonstrate a familiarity with the concept of engaged citizenship and develop the basic skills necessary to negotiate American democracy. This is accomplished via the SUNY Broome Civic Education requirement.
  5. Liberal Arts Individual Studies (ISAS) students will develop fundamental fitness concepts and skills that promote lifelong health and wellness.
  6. Liberal Arts Individual Studies (ISAS) students will demonstrate competency with modern information technology and research skills. This is infused throughout the curricula.
  7. Liberal Arts Individual Studies (ISAS) students will apply critical analysis to texts and arguments and fashion thoughtful, developed arguments of their own. ENG 220, a capstone course for every SUNY Broome student, embeds these skills within the course and these skills are also infused across the curricula.

Students whose transfer goals for baccalaureate study cannot be attained through existing programs may be allowed to structure individualized degree programs. Qualified students, with their advisor, develop an academic plan for degree completion or an “Advised Career Pathway” that will allow selection of the combination General Education and concentration area coursework that will meet the transfer program requirements.

This is not a program for students unsure of their goals or simply exploring several areas of study.

For additional information, consult an Academic Advisor in the Academic Advising Department, Student Services Building, Room 210, +1 (607) 778-5421 or contact the Program Supervisor.

  • English 220 the Senior Seminar Capstone course (Humanities) (3 credits)

Advised Career Pathway and Concentration Electives (33 Credits Minimum)

The area of concentration is designed to provide the flexibility required to prepare for a variety of programs at institutions of higher education.  Students create an academic plan for degree completion based on consultation with a transfer counselor at the selected transfer institution or based on one of the many articulation agreements between SUNY Broome and transfer schools.

Students who know the field of study they wish to pursue but have not selected a transfer institution, may pursue an Advised Career Pathway designed to provide a foundation for courses generally required in the student’s chosen field.

This planning avoids duplication and ensures that the appropriate coursework aligns with transfer institution requirements.

For best course transferability, selections should be made based on consultation with transfer counselors at the selected institutions or by following an articulated agreement.

SUNY Broome requirements:

  • One course with Civic Education attribute (satisfied with the Social Science General Education course)
  • Two courses with Writing Emphasis (W / WE) attribute
