MDA 114L - First Aid

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1.  Demonstrate ability to ensure a scene is safe prior to providing emergency assistance.
2.  State an understanding of why and how to use standard precautions when responding to emergency situations to prevent the spread of bloodborne pathogens.
3.  Demonstrate ability to don/doff gloves and perform an effective hand wash, according to CDC guidelines.
4.  Recognize the ethical and legal issues facing emergency medical issues, including, but not limited to: advanced directives, Good Samaritan Laws, and HIPAA compliance.
5.  List medical supplies and equipment included within an emergency first aid kit.
6.  Describe basic principles of first aid as they apply to the ambulatory care, healthcare, and community based settings.
7.  Demonstrate knowledge of when and ability to use an epinephrine pen and rescue inhaler with/without a spacer.
8.  Demonstrate ability to relieve airway obstruction (choking) in an infant, child, and adult who is unresponsive/responsive and an ability to provide effective rescue breaths.
9.  List principles and steps of professional/provider CPR.
10.  Demonstrate proper technique for 1 and 2 rescuer CPR for infants, children, and adults, including use of an AED.
11.  Demonstrate ability to complete a patient assessment including performing a head to toe emergency assessment and obtaining vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate).
12.  State how to recognize and provide care for a person who has suffered from the following first aid emergencies: head, neck, or spinal injury, broken bones/ sprains, burns and electrical injuries, bites and stings, heat and cold related emergencies, poisoning, seizure, stroke, asthma, diabetic coma/insulin shock, myocardial infarction, and cardiac arrest.
13.  Discuss the importance of stopping bleeding and demonstrate ability to apply a dressing, bandage, and tourniquet.
14.  Demonstrate ability to apply a splint and sling and to check for CMS to prevent patient harm.
15.  State an understanding of types of medications that can be used to assist in emergency medical situations and the contraindications for using these medications.
16.  Demonstrate ability to critically analyze a mock disaster event and an ability to reflect on the emotional impact of emergencies on the victim and emergency responder.
