HIT 101 - Introduction to Health Information Systems
Introduction to the organization of healthcare delivery and overview of the profession. Definition of, standards for, and development of both paper and electronic health records as to content, format, evaluation and completion. Numbering and filing systems, registries, indexes, forms and screen design are addressed. A study of methods for compiling statistics for administration, medical staff, and licensing and accrediting agencies. Vital statistics, public health statistics and hospital statistics are covered.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Trace the development of the health information profession and understand the responsibilities of the health information profession.
- Recognize and describe the uses, users, and functions of the health record.
- Understand the content, documentation requirements, and formats of the health record in various healthcare settings.
- Understand the advantages of electronic health records over paper-based and hybrid records.
- Identify and define terms, initiatives, and technologies used in the planning and implantation of the electronic health record.
- Describe the purpose, development, and importance of healthcare data sets and standards.
- Recognize the purpose, development, and maintenance of registries and indexes used in healthcare.
- Describe research methodologies used in health care. (CAHIIM, III.5)
- Identify the types of vital statistics that are collected in the healthcare industry.
- Identify and explain statistical terminology used in the healthcare industry.
- Calculate statistics for health care operations (ex: Census Data, Percentage of Occupancy, Length of Stay, etc.)
- Summarize standards for the exchange of health information. (CAHIIM III.7)
- Describe consumer engagement activities. (CAHIIM, VI.8)
- Apply privacy basics, confidentiality, and HIPAA standards to protected health information.
