PED 160 - History and Philosophy of Physical Education, Exercise Science and Sport


This course explores physical education, exercise science, and sport, and examines the scope of potential careers available in these multifaceted fields. The course will cover historical events and philosophies that have shaped physical education, exercise science and sport from ancient times to the present. Basic concepts and current issues, including future trends within physical education, exercise science, athletics, fitness and wellness will be explored. Students will be introduced to the heritage, current programs, and future potential of these rapidly expanding areas. Knowledge in these topics will help students prepare for careers in physical education, exercise science, and sport.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Identify historical events, leaders, educators and philosophies in the evolution of Sports and Physical Education.
  2. Analyze past, current, and future trends in Physical Education, Exercise Science, and Sport.
  3. Describe the basic concepts and issues related to the various sub disciplines in Sport Studies.
  4. Evaluate career options available in the field of Physical Education, Exercise Science, and Sports Studies.
  5. Create a personal philosophy with the student’s chosen area of Sport Studies.
