SOC 111 - Social Problems

An introduction to the major concepts, sociological theories, and social scientific research methods used by sociologists to study social problems. Content will include, but not be limited to, sociological theories, social scientific research methods, social stratification, diversity, inequality, the social institutions, crime/deviance and social control, social justice, social policy, and social action.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Describe major sociological concepts and theories.
Apply the methods sociologists use to explore social phenomena.
Describe the historical and contemporary societal factors that shape the development of individual and group identity involving race, class and gender.
Analyze the role that complex networks of social structures and systems play in the creation and perpetuation of the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity.
Apply the principles of rights, access, equity, and autonomous participation to past, current, or future social justice action.
Identify the consequences of racism in the United States at the individual, group, and systemic levels.
